About Me

27 May 2019

It's FF@5 -7/9/18 re-visited!

Welcome!

I'm revisiting a post I did last year because, well, I can and I'm sure this one may have been missed by some of you! LOL. I know I had a hard time looking for it and well I may have been using Wordpress for a while but I'm learning new things about it all the time.

So here you go, this was a Fabulous Fridays At Five'o'clock'ish blog post last September 2018.

Have you ever wondered how colour trends are created?  Do you ever wonder how some people can pull colours together and seem to make them work, though they may not have been colours you may  have thought of?  Well let’s take a little dip into the world of colour.  I love colour and my heart goes out to many in this world who can’t see it for whatever reason, not just blindness.

In the world of colour there is the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®.  You may or may not have heard of Pantone, not to be confused with ‘pantene’ the hair products.  I’ve known about Pantone most of my adult/working life.  I have worked in publishing, printing and media places where sometimes you have to get the right colour ‘coding/numbers’ eg hex codes so that shades can be mass produced, paint colours mixed, ink batches to be consistent.  And yes even colours on a webpage to be consistent. Ever wonder where most modern colour matching/coding comes from?  Yep, Pantone©, you got it!

I’ve been subscribed to Pantone’s newsletter for quite a few years. Here is an excerpt from Pantone’s website about them and what they do and how the world uses their powerful colouring ‘tools’...

NOTE: this is a quote, I did not write this, I do not claim ownership of this quote...
About Pantone Standards

In 1963, Pantone revolutionized the printing industry with the colorful PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®, an innovative tool allowing for the faithful selection, articulation and reproduction of consistent, accurate color anywhere in the world. The tool organizes color standards through a proprietary numbering system and chip format, which have since become iconic to the Pantone brand.

Pantone’s color language supports all color conscious industries; textiles, apparel, beauty, interiors, architectural and industrial design, encompassing over 10,000 color standards across multiple materials including printing, textiles, plastics, pigments, and coatings.

Pantone Standards are available both digitally and physically. Integrated workflow tools such as PantoneLIVE and Pantone Studio, ensure market-relevancy and color achievability as technology continues to transform the design process.

So why am I writing about this today?  In one of my Pantone newsletters, this is one of the photos that stood out to me, it made me go wow!  I go wow a l,ot but a light bulb went off and I just had to write about it.

Stampin’ Up! is so on the ball and I know from conversations I’ve been privy to in the presence of Sara Douglass, SU’s CEO, that they work way way in advance to bring you what is going to be on trend and current. Most of the time 2 years ahead, I kid you not!  There are 5 new  In Colours coming on 4th June 2019 so you may get an idea of just how far ahead these colours were chosen.  The colours in my product list below this post are the 2018 to 2020 In Colours.  2019 to 2021's In Colours will compliment what are already in the beautiful colour families we already have!

When 2018 - 2020's In colours came out in the current annual catalogue, the 5 in colours really stood out to me more so than many others.  It goes back to when I worked in publishing. To when I helped my son through his uni degree in graphic designing. I thought of the Mondrian style of colour blocking, all things we learned together and things I learned through my working life (oh and as well as art history in high school). Recognise this colour blocking in the photo below?  Yes, that is Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist who was very influential in 20th century modern art.

MondrialStyleSept2018

If you are around my age give or take 10 years older or younger, you may remember a certain brand of hair spray that used this colour blocking on their white tins.  I loved it during the ‘big hair’ days LOL.

So what I’m trying to get at with today’s post is this.  If you feel matching colours is beyond you, if you feel that you could never get the results some artists get because you get overwhelmed with trying to match things, let Stampin Up’s colour suites help you.  Let Pantone© help you.  Use what you see around you in design and media, shop front window displays, doona cover designs, what ever.  Let it speak to you and think yeah, I CAN do that!

soooo, til next time, remember,

happy stamping, colouring & creating!

PurpleNewFabulous Fridays at 5'o'clock'ish!

Welcome to FF@F'o'clock'ish, it's well and truly out of what as far as timing goes but as people say, better late than never LOL

Today I unboxed my Hugs from Shelli Paper Pumpkin kit.  I did get some sneak peaks of it at Onstage Auckland last month (April) but I had to hold some things back. Many of you may have seen so much online already and I just waited til I had my hands on the kit so I could share it with you.  This is the outside of the box, isn't it pretty!

This video was done earlier today and I still wasn't quite awake. I had to fight off two kitties to ensure nothing got knocked over or 'swatted/chewed/stolen' little rascals they can be, especially Mr Nibbles!  Look at him when I tried to open it yesterday morning! Nibbles by name, Nibbles by nature, be we loves 'im!

This is for those of you who only know me as Wirg/Wirgie and don't know my real/given name and it's meaning and how/why the nicname 'Wirg' came in to being.

I looked up my real name's meaning for my friend Rhonda recently and found this on Wikipeadia ..... I now know why my mother gave me this lovely name and why I embrace it these days too.
Quote:  Virginia is a feminine given name derived from the Ancient Roman family name Virginius, a name probably derived from the Latin word virgo, meaning "maiden" or "virgin." According to legend, Virginia was a Roman girl who was killed by her father in order to save her from seduction by the corrupt government official Appius Claudius Crassus.[1]

The name was the 34th most common name for American women and girls, according to the census of 1990. It was the 545th most popular name given to baby girls born in the United States in 2007.[1]

Virginia Dare was the first child born to English parents in North America. Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter that prompted the famous "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" editorial in the September 21, 1897 edition of the New York Sun. The most famous Virginia is probably the English modernist author Virginia Woolf.  End Quote.

So where did I  get “Wirg/Wirgie” from?

Someone (well many) asked me didn't they ROFL. This is what I shared on my personal facebook wall over the weekend with a friend.  No, you won't see it if you are not in my friends listing but you will what I've written here and on my business Facebook page.

Here goes....a direct copy with a bit of editing to make it a bit more 'polished'.

Many years ago in a land far far away called 'the Australian Public Service" I use to work in a government agency prior to the last one I worked at. You know that one from which I retired (ie Medicare's Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme/PBS). That first government agency was named "The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency" or 'The Agency" and it shall here in after be named the "place that gave me lots of money to make me redundant.

At said agency there was a woman who was ment to be the IT expert, she wasn't but yeah she worked there anyway. I was ment to go home by 2.30pm most days as I had to get my son from school. Many times she would beg me to stay back and help her with the system back ups for all the computers. As I was only ment to be permanent part time, any extra I did was good because said Agency would pay me huge amounts of time & a half and also give me flex time so I could take extra days off when needed.

I always knew when I was going to be begged to stay back. Down the open plan windowed area she'd saunter all coy saying 'Wiiiirg.... Wirgie... pretty please Wirgie would you stay back and help me, I am overwhelmed, go on Wirgie, I'll sign your overtime sheet'

So I became Wirg or Wirgie and when I left the public service all together I didn't want either Agencies snooping on me. I knew they didn't know about the nicname so I ran with it. Both agencies had a privacy clause in my work contracts.  Much of what I knew/still know is highly classified. I would not want to be tracked down by other agency employees who left with grievances and wanted me to be a 'witness' to the unfair treatment. I walked away with my head held high (as much as a short person can) and the really cute nic name of Wirgie. And let's face it, it's been a conversation starter for sure.

End of the story from the far far away land of "the Australian 🤣Public Service"

happy stamping, colouring & creating!

Thursday Thoughts, 2/5/2019

ThursdaysThoughtsMar2019a

Last Saturday night we were at the Sydney Swans vs GWS game at the SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground for the unaware). It was also the weekend of ANZAC day.  ANZAC day is 25th April every year and if fell on a Thursday this year, 2019.  We watched the MCG game on TV and I can only imagine the atmosphere as we saw all the lights off and the eternal flame being carried by a soldier on horseback around the the MCG. (Melbourne Cricket Ground). Many people held up torches or the like, it was beautiful.

I came across this clip I recorded at the SCG, ah the memories again of many ANZAC day matches. We've been Swans members with the same seats since 2003/4. This is the first time I've had a powerful enough mobile phone camera to capture this. I didn't want to take video during the last post & the minute's silence but this was amazing at the start! You have to be there to feel the atmosphere, it's so different to being in front of the tv watching. You could have heard a pin drop during the last post, revallry(?) and the minute's silence, then it was on with the roar of the crowds!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu0U-z0qBGw

You can see just how close our seats are to the boundary line and where we sit in comparison to both goal posts.  People were still pouring in during this.  It was a great atmosphere.  So Swans lost again but yeah, you can't always make the top 8 every year.

And check this out, no baseball styled cap for me. We must have collected over a 100 Swans supporter's caps over the years. Many we've given away.  I really want a bucket styled hat, I live in hope that they bring those back in the Swans Shop!  :-)

Til next time, remember,

happy stamping colouring & creating!

And live life in the Red & White LOL
